Wiring a 3-phase starter involves connecting the three-phase supply lines to the input terminals, the motor leads to the output terminals, and the control wiring to the designated control terminals. Enclosed combination starters like the RX2E and RX3E feature door-mounted LCD keypads and pre-wired configurations to simplify installation. Always follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram and applicable NEMA and ANSI standards.

Common types include across-the-line (full voltage) starters, reduced voltage starters, and solid state soft starters. Soft starters, such as those in Benshaw's CSXi, RX, EMX4, and MVE-P series, provide stepless voltage ramp-up for smooth acceleration. Medium voltage starters like the CBMVRX and MVRXE series address large horsepower applications from 100A up to 25,000 HP.

Low voltage soft starters typically operate at 380–600 VAC and cover motors in the 15–800 HP range, such as the CSXi and RX series. Medium voltage soft starters operate from 2.3 kV to 15 kV and are designed for large industrial motors up to 25,000 HP. Medium voltage units like the MVE-P and CBMVRX include additional isolation and protection components such as vacuum contactors and circuit breakers.

Benshaw soft starters provide comprehensive motor protection including overload, ground fault, under/overvoltage, phase loss, locked rotor, and thermal protection. Advanced models like the MVRXE and RX3E comply with multiple ANSI protection standards (14, 19, 27, 37, 38, 46–51G, 59, 66, 74, 81, 86) and feature event recorders with up to 99 logged events for diagnostic purposes.

The CSXi compact series supports Ethernet-based protocols including Profinet, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP, as well as Profibus, DeviceNet, and Modbus RTU. The RX2E, RX3E, and MVRXE series support Modbus register mapping. Optional communication cards are also available on the EMX4 series.
